Scholarly Publishing and Niche Publishing Industry Website Design and Development Solutions.
Windmill Design has a history of working in the scholarly and academic publishing industries, as well as trade organizations, online journals, book publishers, and software and service providers to the publishing industry. During that time we’ve helped many clients differentiate themselves through strong branding, unique websites, and engaging online journals and communities.
The Scholarly Kitchen is an independent blog aimed at helping support the mission of the Society for Scholarly Publishing by bringing together differing opinions, commentary, and ideas. They needed to refresh their website and branding to bring them up to date with technology, and to better reflect their personality.
KWF was in need of a re-brand to launch KWF into the next chapter by creating two distinct identities, one for KWF Editorial and one for KWF Consulting. These needed to be distinguishable as separate, scalable and backed by a smart and distinctive scholarly publishing brand.
The Unique Needs of the Publishing and Scholarly Publishing Industry
The academic and scholarly publishing community is complex and diverse. A few of the differences that make this industry challenging include:
- Unique industry jargon
- Multiple stakeholders
- Changing leadership in educational groups and societies
- Unique software and publishing platforms
- The continued shift from print to online
This diversity makes it a challenge to find digital marketing companies that understand the industry and can deliver the right results. At Windmill Design, we understand the challenges and can help you make an impact in your industry, contact us to learn how.
Before and After
Aries Systems wanted a sophisticated and modern website that would provide a rich and user-friendly experience for publishers, authors, and editors alike. The site features a video library, custom icons, and infographics that illustrate the software’s workflows, a quick-search Journals List tool for editors, and a wide variety of page layouts.
Windmill Design Has a Longstanding Reputation in the Academic Publishing Industry
One challenge the publishing community faces is the creation of online journals. Whether using an existing software platform or creating a CMS-driven website, this requires careful management of engagement metrics, page views, ad placement, subscription sales, and appealing gated content.
Since you aren’t targeting the typical consumer, we often have to work with unique messaging and conversion paths. For example, the typical buyer of an academic textbook is a student, while the instructor that selects the books used in the curriculum is actually the target audience. Often, authors can be the primary audience for journals while librarians are the actual purchaser. This makes it important to effectively identify your target audience to create a successful online presence.
Our team has been working with scholarly and niche publishing groups for years. Because of this, we can meet the diverse challenges that this group has to face. Whether it’s working closely with your editorial staff or marketing manager, our team won’t have trouble adapting to your needs.
We also understand that working with your decision makers follows a different process than a typical business would use. Our team is capable of working closely with your leaders, and has developed unique processes for working with and gaining consensus from large boards and memberships.
